Decorator William Haines created this "Ice Crystal" sconce for a client back in 1953, using faceted pieces of acrylic material. At the time, only two of these stunning creations were made, but they've recently been re-issued in a limited edition and are being produced by the very workshop that did the originals. A larger than life figure, Haines actually began his career as a successful actor in Hollywood during the 30's, and while working at MGM studios decided to open an antique shop. Impressed with his glamorous design approach, celebrities such as Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson hired him to update their homes, eventually pushing Haines in a new direction that would end up defining his legacy . And while several of his custom furnishings are still available, I think this sconce reflects perfectly the sparkling glamor of this true Hollywood legend.
